Past ExhibitsThe Cheyenne Mountain Heritage Center Gallery opened in the summer of 2006. Housed in the renovated School District 12 administration building, the gallery room provides 450 square feet of exhibit floor space. The original oak floor was refinished, walls were painted, and new lighting was installed. Hanging art will complete the look of this refurbished room. Dr. Paul Homan Exhibit The Cheyenne Mountain Heritage Center honored the life of a remarkable Cheyenner, Dr. Paul Barringer Homan, a man of many ambitions. The exhibit touched on the multi-faceted life Homan led, including more than thirty-one years of service to the Cheyenne Mountain School District. The exhibit captured the broad-ranging interests of a life that centered on teaching: of the heart from the heart. Homan, though first and foremost an educator, somehow managed so much more. He was a member of or involved in the Cheyenne Mountain Riding Club, El Paso County Pioneers Association, Ivywild-Cheyenne Cañon Fire Department, National Ski Patrol, American Red Cross (50+ years), National Association of the 10th Mountain Division, Lions Club, Rocky Mountain Outdoor Writers and Photographers, Friends of Cheyenne Cañon, and Fountain Creek Nature Center. Dr. Homan was also a driving force in the early development of the Cheyenne Mountain Heritage Center. Photo Exhibition Residents, members, and students were invited to share their favorite photo “On or Around Cheyenne Mountain.” After all the submissions were received, the photos were hung in our gallery. A reception was held in January and Don Goede III, local art critic, Scott Johnson, professor of photography and sculpture at Colorado College, and Michael Myers, professional New York photographer, served as our discerning judges. The contests winners were:
Courtney's Forest All entrants received a complimentary membership to the Heritage Center.
CAÑON ELEMENTARY RETROSPECTIVE The Cheyenne Mountain Heritage Center announced its exhibition, "Cañon Elementary Retrospective," which ran through June 20, 2009 in the CMHC gallery space at 1118 W. Cheyenne Road. The retrospective was a collection of photographs, art, and memorabilia representing the 55-year history of Cañon Elementary, which was closed May 20, 2009. Features of the display included three lithographs by Birger Sandzen which formerly hung in the library at Cañon, and several vintage Native American headdresses which at one time were used by District 12 students for presentations, dances and special events. There was also a Memory Book for exhibit patrons to simply sign, or to record their thoughts and memories of the school. The majority of the pieces in the exhibit were donated to the Heritage Center by the Cañon PTO and will be archived by CMHC archivist Curt Elliott--who also developed the exhibition from the donated items.
