School plays were an important part of each student's education. These photos are of the fictitious western mountain town of Granite. This play was performed in the mid 1920s. As superintendent, Lloyd Shaw was known to teach a class one hour, then return to his desk to finish writing the next scene prior to rehearsal. Sets were built by the students, and all grade levels were encouraged to take part in the activities. Tickets were sold to folks in the local community and the proceeds supported additional student activities throughout the school year.
The play The Littlest Wiseman was another play authored by Dr. Shaw. It was performed for many years during the holiday season, and families looked forward to attending the yearly performance long after their student had graduated. Costumes were created by each student. The angel wings were formed with wire and covered with individual tissue paper feathers. Dorothy Shaw, Lloyd's wife and the school librarian, helped the students learn their lines and basic acting techniques.
